The man with the hoe Edwin Markham William Doxey Porter Garnett 9781172294121 Books Reviews
To be clear, I do NOT have the product for sale here. I have not seen it. However the poem The Man with the Hoe is very powerful. I highly recommend reading it. This one poem can be read in one sitting. It is fairly clearly written, sort of like The New Colossus, by Emma Lazarus. But it is about the downtrodden working person. I first heard of it while reading a biography of Langston Hughes written by Arnold Rampersad. I downloaded it online for free...
There are 70 poems in this volume (THE MAN WITH THE HOE AND OTHER POEMS). They were copyrighted in 1899, by Edwin Markam. And, I did not read this version offered here, but instead downloaded it for Free elsewhere on the internet.

Most of these poems are short, one page, in fact. I enjoyed some of them, and I won't comment further because, really, poetry is a personal thing. But I did really enjoy the "Man with a Hoe" and "From the Hand of a Child".
excerpt from MwH
Bowed by the weight of centuries he leans
Upon his hoe and gazes on the ground,
The emptiness of ages in his face,
And on his back the burden of the world.
Who made him dead to rapture and despair,
A thing that grieves not and that never hopes,
Stolid and stunned, a brother to the ox
Who loosened and let down this brutal jaw?
Whose was the hand that slanted back this brow?
Whose breath blew out the light within this brain?
--------
Excerpt from "From the Hand of a Child"
One day a child ran after me in the street,
To give me a half-blown rose, a fire-white
rose,
Its stem all warm yet from the tight-shut
hand.
Enjoyable. Worth a look for those who like poetry. As I said previously, this work is available free and in a variety of formats.
